Grandpa is a Wonderful Man

Jonathon, the 14 year old grandson of John Entner wrote those words about his grandfather, and we agree!

John, who died at the age of 98, has been a man of compassion as well as generosity over his long lifetime. With a strong interest in world missions, he not only supported his church but had a desire to assist young people preparing for world missions.

Born of German and Austrian parents in 1906, John dropped out of school in the ninth grade but always believed in the value of a good education. In spite of his brief schooling, he was a good businessman and succeeded in construction and real estate.

When he learned how he could actually increase his income, assist in some capital gains tax issues AND benefit students preparing for missions, John opened a gift annuity with Point Loma Nazarene University when he was 84, and took out his last and largest annuity when he was 93, bringing his lifetime total to $350,000.

In addition, he encouraged his sister, Hilda Buttress, to open gift annuities and leave her Los Angeles home to the university in a Reserved Life Estate. John trusted the university to be there for Hilda's friend who was left to live in her home.

John's son, John, and daughter Carol Maddux, (a 1969 Pasadena College/Point Loma Nazarene University graduate), in honor of their father and continuing his passion, made a memorial gift of $308,000 to Point Loma Nazarene University for the purpose of assisting students preparing for world missions. Dr. Robert Brower, President, remarked how the gift fits so well "with the university's motto: 'Teach, Shape and Send.'"

The grandson went on to say, "He spends time with me just talking and telling stories about when he was growing up. His stories about going hunting with his buddies are the most exciting ones! I love him very much."
