Multi-faceted Legacy

Multi-faceted Legacy

Legacy Two Fold - Two Endowed Scholarships and Two Gift Annuities

Alice Crill celebrated her 95th birthday more than once, including a visit with several members of Point Loma Nazarene University's Office of University Advancement in her home near PLNU. Her energy reflected her athletic beginnings in higher education, first as a student athlete and second as a women's basketball coach after her graduation.

Alice's long association with PLNU began in 1947 when she and her husband, Chester Crill, moved to Pasadena. Chester served as chairman of the Music Department at Pasadena College and music director at Bresee Church of the Nazarene, while Alice was church organist at the same church. The Crills held those positions for 20 years.

During their 56 years of marriage, the Crills raised two daughters and one son. When Pasadena College moved to Point Loma, they followed, with Chester remaining on the music faculty until he completed 30 years of service.

Once in San Diego, Alice began playing the organ for two different churches and taught private piano students in her home studio until a few months before her death.

Point Loma Nazarene University has benefited from the Crills' love, support, hard work, leadership and dedication in many ways. There are the concerts and church services enhanced by their musical talents. There is the beautiful organ sitting in the Chester C. Crill Performance Hall, purchased for the university by the Crills in partnership with the community. There are also two endowed scholarships providing financial assistance to students pursuing an education in music: The Chester C. and Alice Crill Endowed Scholarship and The Crill Organ Endowed Scholarship.

Alice and Chester, wanting to reduce their tax burden and provide an income stream for the future, formed a Charitable Gift Annuity with PLNU in 1994. The following year, Chester went to be with the Lord, and Alice took out a second Charitable Gift Annuity.

Alice continued benefiting from these gift annuities and until her recent passage to glory. She also had peace of mind, knowing that she was helping ensure the future of Point Loma Nazarene University. She said she was very thankful for all the Lord provided. She appreciated the freedom of time and income that allowed her to follow her passions: teaching piano, spending time in her garden and fellowshipping with friends and neighbors in the community.

The Crills' legacy will go on forever and assist many students for years to come.

Establishing an endowed scholarship takes as little as $30,000 and the rewards are immeasurable.

Charitable Gift Annuities can provide an immediate tax deduction and increase your income, part of which becomes tax free. Rates are age-based. For more information, please contact the Office of University Advancement at [email protected] or 619-849-2302.
